Old town doors

Old town locksmith in Villajoyosa, on foot through the walls

Inside the walls the streets are narrow, the steps are steep, and about twenty of them sit behind number-plate checkpoints for authorised vehicles. The van stays outside and the locksmith walks up to your door. Once there, an old wooden door is treated as something to keep.

Getting to you

The restricted zone, and why the van parks outside it

The town hall’s ordinance for the historic centre turns its streets into a restricted-access zone. Vehicles enter through control points that can read number plates, and only authorised vehicles may go in, for up to 30 minutes: owners and residents, guests of registered hotels and tourist flats, removals and building works by application. In June 2026 the bollards on calle Canalejas were automated the same way.

The streets inside include carrer Major, Fray Posidonio Mayor, the plaza de Castelar and the church square, María Amada, Pozo, Bigueta, Trinidad, Costereta, Pal, Santa Marta, San José, San Cristóbal, San Pedro, San Telmo and part of Arsenal. If your door is on one of them, the locksmith comes up on foot from the nearest place the van can stop.

What helps: your street and number, the nearest square or church step, and whether there are stairs between the street and your door. A WhatsApp location pin sent from the doorstep is the surest of all. The guide to a lockout inside the camera zone goes through it.

Doors worth keeping

The street doors of the painted houses

La Vila Joiosa was a town of fishermen, sailors and merchants rather than noble families, and its old houses show it: rendered stone painted in strong colours, decorated eaves, niches, ironwork and balconies, the best known of them built on top of the 16th-century wall. The street doors that go with them are often wooden, with a mortice lock and a long key that has opened the same door for decades.

Those locks fail in a few familiar ways:

  • The key turns but the bolt drags: the door has dropped or swollen and the bolt no longer meets its keep.
  • The key will not go in fully: dirt, old grease or a broken spring inside the lock.
  • The latch does not hold: a worn follower or spring, so the door blows open.
  • Only one key is left, and it is wearing thin.

Repair before replace

How an old lock is brought back to work

  1. Look at door and lock together

Most old locks that “stop working” are fighting a door that has moved. Both are checked before anything is taken apart.

  2. Free and adjust

The lock is cleaned, the keep moved to meet the bolt again, the hinges looked at. Often that is the whole job.

  3. Rebuild or replace in the same pocket

A worn mechanism is repaired or a new mortice lock of the same size goes into the existing hole in the wood.

  4. A cylinder, if you want one

A mortice lock that takes a euro cylinder can be fitted instead, so the old door locks with a modern key.

The cylinder itself, once there is one, is ordinary planned work: see changing a lock or cylinder.

Protected façades

What a lock job touches in a protected house, and what it does not

The historic centre is a protected ensemble, and new façades follow the colour chart approved by the town hall for its special plan. A lock repair, a new mortice lock in the existing pocket or a new cylinder happens inside the door and leaves the façade as it was. Replacing the door, or painting it another colour, is a planning matter: check with the town hall before ordering.

If the façade or the door has just been repainted and the door now sticks, the paint is usually to blame rather than the lock: the guide to a door that sticks after repainting explains what to look at first.

Who lives behind these doors

Residents, holiday guests and owners far away

The old town is lived in all year, and some of its houses are let to visitors. A guest shut out of a flat inside the walls needs the same walk in as anyone else, and a host who is not in town needs someone they can send: see the locksmith service for holiday rentals. Families with a parent living alone up one of the steep streets will find practical advice in the guide to an elderly parent in the old town.

Shut out right now? Go to the emergency page or ring. To have an old lock looked at, send a photo through the contact page; the full list of streets and partidas covered is on the call-out area page. If the problem is getting in rather than repairing the lock, how doors are opened explains the methods.

Asked on the phone

Old doors, new cylinders and the façade

Do I need to get the locksmith’s van authorised to enter my street?

No. The van is parked outside the restricted zone and the locksmith walks in with what the job needs. If a large part has to be carried, it is planned so that one trip is enough.

My street door has a big old key. Can it be kept?

Often, yes. A mortice lock that has stopped working is usually worn, dirty or out of line with its keep, and can be cleaned, adjusted or rebuilt. If it cannot, a modern mortice lock of the same size can go into the same pocket in the wood.

Can a modern cylinder be fitted to an old wooden door?

In most cases, yes, by fitting a new mortice lock that takes a euro cylinder into the existing door. The outside of the door changes very little, usually only the escutcheon around the keyhole.

Will a lock change affect the colour or the look of my façade?

A lock or cylinder change does not touch the façade. Replacing the door itself, or changing its colour, is a different matter in the protected centre: ask the town hall’s planning department before you order a new door.

An old door inside the walls that will not behave?
